Suburban Folk Art
I worked on the figure using an abstracted, two-dimensional approach from 2003 to 2009. I was inspired very much by the work of Henri Matisse and Will Barnet.
The paintings were very whimsical but also felt iconic. They expressed my emotions and ideas about everyday life: self-examination, pursuit of the spiritual, work, children, pets... These concerns were remarkably similar to the daily lives of so many suburban women, so I called the series 'Suburban Folk Art'. The common thread in my work then was a strong attention to and affection for composition and expressive drawing and color. I found large shapes arranged into exciting compositions, personal line work, and deep, rich color and texture visually stimulating.  |
